About This Coffee
The Region
San Pedro Necta belongs to the Huehuetenango department, well-known because of the quality of their coffee. The green landscapes and the charm of their people in the region gives a magical experience to every visitor. The region is mainly indigenous so the dress is beautiful and distinct, the men dress in white pants crossed with multi-coloured lines, while women dress in beautiful blouses with different embroidery representative of their culture, and long colourful skirts.
The houses in the region are in the middle of the mountains and to get there is an adventure, you get in touch with the nature, the air is fresh, and the environment is warm.
The name is in honour of the Catholic patron San Pedro, while Necta is a Mam (dominate local language) word that means 'where the river passes'. In fact, several rivers flows through the region.
The Process
On La Unión the coffee crops are shaded with different kind of forest trees, the coffee crops are planted at a distance of 1.2 x 2.1 meters from each other, making them look like contour lines marking elevation. It is important to highlight that they use organic compost, maintaining the soils fertile and healthy. They are using washed process for their production, traditional in Guatemala, after being selected with attention and detention they use big tanks to ferment the coffee overnight and then it is washed, and finally dried on patios. Carlos and his family now are experimenting with naturals and honeys as well as washed.
History of Guatemalan Coffee
Although coffee was brought over from the Caribbean in the mid-18th century by Jesuit priests, it was used primarily as an ornamental plant and garden crop for 100 years in Guatemala. Coffee wasn’t widely traded, however, until commercial production began in the 1850s. The volcanic soil and various micro-climates proved ideal for growing coffee in Guatemala. Coffee, within a generation, became the country’s most important crop. In 1860, Guatemala exported 140,000 pounds of coffee, and just 25 years later, the country was exporting over 40 million pounds. Large numbers of coffee farmers were German immigrants responsible for many inventions and innovations related to coffee milling. Most of Guatemala’s coffee was exported to Germany until the First World War, when exports shifted to the United States.
