About This Coffee

The Slow Food Community Productores de Café Colaborativo Jacoba La Unión Nariño was founded in 2023 in collaboration with Asprounión co-operative association in La Unión, Nariño. The objective of the Community is to promote the transformation of the coffee growing family into socially, economically and environmentally sustainable business units. To do so, they aim to work in a participative scheme, where each one of the coffee growing families are actively participating in the value chain, from the planting to the commercialization of their coffee.

The Region

The Narino department in South-West Colombia is renowned for its coffee quality, but also for having a high concentration of smallholder farmers with a low average farm area of 1,13 Ha.

This means that coffee generally receives a high level of care and attention to maximise quality and yield. 35 of the 62 municipalities in the Narino department are coffee producing. Because of its location, Narino has rich environmental diversity and a broad range of different ecosystems in which coffee can be cultivated. With altitudes of up to 2,300masl, coffees can mature slowly, producing a profile with distinct citric acidity and sweet chocolate and caramel notes.

The Producers

At the same time as they became part of the Slow Food Coffee Coalition, the community decided to embrace a participatory guarantee system initiative - in addition to the third-party certifications they already have. PGS are alternative methods of certification based on participation, collaboration and trust, where producers work hand in hand with different stakeholders to guarantee the quality of their coffee, according to the vision of the SFCC's manifesto. The Ethical committee, composed by member of the Community, managed the calendar of the field visits with the Guarantee Group in order to complete the Guarantee Sheet for each producing family of the coffee in this lot, based on a set of commonly-agreed guidelines within all communities participating in the Coffee Coalition.

Luis Carlos Burbano Gomez, the manager of Asprounión and the leader of the Slow Food community since the foundation of the community became an important leader of the Coffee Coalition, participating in international events and bringing the experience of the families of Nariño working with good, clean and fair coffee in international platforms.
